A short video in Malaysia can cost RM40 or RM2,500. Length alone will not tell you which.
Video editing cost in Malaysia in 2026 starts around RM40 to RM150 for a short clip cut from footage you own, RM150 to RM500 for a podcast episode, and RM4,000 to RM15,000 for a motion graphics explainer. Footage volume, editing complexity, finished length and required versions all affect the price.
Both are real, and they are not the same product. A beginner on r/malaysians charged RM40 to edit a one-minute Reels ad. In a 2023 thread, a videographer shooting and editing a 30-second coffee clip was working toward about RM1,000 for 42 hours, and was told he should be asking RM2,000 to RM2,500. Editing was 20 of those hours. An hourly rate needs an estimate of hours and a clear list of included work to be useful.

How length and editing requirements affect the price
A five-minute podcast trim can cost less than a 90-second explainer. That sounds wrong until you see what each asks for.
The podcast already happened. Someone talked for an hour, a camera recorded it, and the work is picking which stretch is worth keeping once the sound is fixed. The raw material is free because you already paid for it.
The explainer starts with nothing. Every screen is designed and every movement timed by hand, so 20 animated beats is 20 small design jobs. The podcast is one long selection job. That is why the short one costs more.

Length still matters. A longer finished video can mean more caption correction, sound work and checking. More source footage means more time watching and selecting, even for a short final cut.
Check the finished-length limit beside a starting price. A video beyond that limit needs its own estimate after footage review. These details also affect the quote:
- Animated screens and charts are design hours before editing hours.
- Bad audio, mixed sources, or a file pulled off Instagram cost time to rescue.
- Revision rounds take time. Agree how many are included and what counts as a change to the original brief.
- Another screen size of the same edit needs reframing, caption adjustments and checking. A new cut or redesigned layout needs a separate estimate.
Freelancer or studio, and what you give up
A freelancer costs less per video and often cares more, since you are a bigger share of their month. What you give up is cover. One person gets sick, takes a better job, or goes quiet over a festive week, and your schedule goes too. Part of a studio's premium is a second editor who can pick up the file.
Our honest read: if the job is a weekly Short and a three-day slip costs nothing, hire a freelancer. If it has a launch date, pay for cover. Most Malaysian businesses we talk to need the first and shop for the second, then wonder why the quote hurt.
How long it takes, and what you should get back
Agree the delivery date and included files before paying a deposit. These timelines are guides, subject to the brief and editor availability. The items below are things to confirm in the quote, not automatic inclusions:

Ask for a separate caption file so you can change subtitles without re-editing text embedded in the video. Confirm revision rounds, extra versions and any project-file handover in writing.
