Forward Deployed Engineers in Malaysia

A forward deployed engineer is a software engineer who works inside your company instead of from a vendor's office. They join your meetings, use your live data, and build against the workflows they can watch directly. A contractor is handed a written brief and builds it. A forward deployed engineer writes the brief, because nobody inside the company has managed to yet. The role started at Palantir and is now standard at OpenAI, Anthropic and Google Cloud.

You get your process written down step by step, in the order it really happens rather than the order the org chart implies. Each step is marked as one of three things: a fixed rule that should go to ordinary software, a judgment call a model can make, or something expensive enough when it goes wrong that it stays with a person. Every step carries a figure for what it costs you today. Most audits run two to four weeks depending on how many processes are in scope. The document is yours either way. You can hand it to your own engineers and never speak to us again.

Staff augmentation gives you an extra pair of hands who works your backlog. A forward deployed engineer is expected to question the backlog. The engagement is bought against an outcome, such as cutting how long a job takes or how often it goes wrong, not against a queue of tickets. It also means the first few weeks produce a document rather than code. That is the part most clients find uncomfortable, and it is the part that decides whether the rest works.

The audit is quoted per engagement after a short call, because the price depends on how many processes you want covered and how many people we need to sit with. If you carry on into a monthly embed, a realistic Malaysian range for an embedded senior engineer is RM 15,000 to RM 25,000 a month. For comparison, hiring an experienced AI lead in-house runs roughly RM 25,000 to RM 35,000 a month once benefits and statutory contributions are counted, and enterprise transformation projects with the large consultancies start from about RM 180,000. Figures are estimates and vary by scope and seniority.

Three cases, and we will say so on the call. If you already know exactly what needs building, buy a fixed-scope project instead, because you would be paying discovery rates for an answer you already have. If your engineering team is under about ten people, there is not enough process to restructure, and the bottleneck is usually one architecture decision. And if no senior decision maker has said out loud that the way of working has to change, an embedded engineer becomes a well-paid observer who cannot touch what they can see.
