SmartBus Monitor is an IoT-integrated fleet management platform built for a Malaysian intercity bus operator managing a fleet of 80+ vehicles across Peninsula Malaysia. The system aggregates GPS telemetry from on-board devices, processes location data in real time, and exposes live tracking to both operations staff and passengers through a web portal and Progressive Web App. Route analytics and driver performance scoring give management actionable insights to optimize schedules and reduce fuel costs.
The Challenge
The bus operator had no real-time visibility into their fleet. Dispatchers relied on phone calls with drivers to track bus positions, leading to inaccurate ETAs communicated to passengers, frequent missed connections at transit hubs, and no data to investigate accident or breakdown incidents after the fact.
Our Solution
Gotchaa Lab deployed a system of 4G-connected GPS trackers on each vehicle, feeding location events into a MQTT broker. A Go-based backend processes the telemetry stream, computes ETAs against predefined route waypoints, and stores historical trip data in a TimescaleDB time-series database. Passengers can scan a QR code at bus stops to view live departure times, and operators access a full fleet dashboard with geofence alerts and trip replay.
Results
- Achieved real-time GPS tracking with under 10-second location update intervals across the full fleet
- Reduced passenger complaints about inaccurate ETAs by 65% within the first quarter
