CIP Spark or CIP Sprint: Which Cradle Grant You Can Actually Apply For

TL;DR

  • CIP Spark accepts an application from two individuals with no company at all, and pays up to RM150,000 over a maximum of 18 months. At least one applicant must be Malaysian and one must reside in Malaysia. There is no paid-up capital requirement.
  • CIP Sprint pays up to RM600,000 but its criteria are headed COMPANIES and line one is Sdn Bhd. There is no individual route, and the company needs RM10,000 paid-up capital plus at least two directors.
  • Both grants are conditional. The amount disbursed becomes repayable if the funding agreement is terminated, and Cradle's grants page describes Sprint as conditional and convertible. Money arrives by advance payment and reimbursement against milestones, not as a lump sum.
  • Two questions Cradle's own pages do not answer: whether an approved individual applicant must then incorporate to receive the money, and how a founder's own build time is costed inside the budget. Email [email protected] before you plan around either.

Incorporate a Sdn Bhd first, then go looking for grant money. That is the order most Malaysian founders are given, and for the biggest early-stage Cradle grant Malaysia offers, it is backwards.

Cradle Fund runs two grants under the Cradle Investment Programme. CIP Spark pays up to RM150,000 and accepts an application from two individuals with no company at all. CIP Sprint pays up to RM600,000 and accepts nothing except a Sdn Bhd. So the useful question is not whether you feel ready to incorporate. It is which of the two you qualify for today.

Those two columns are rungs on one ladder. Spark needs no registration at all. Sprint is four times the money, on the far side of an incorporation.

Can you get a Cradle grant without a Sdn Bhd?

For Spark, yes. Cradle's own page says so in one line:

CIP SPARK is open to both companies and individuals. CIP SPARK accepts applications from various stages from ideation, prototype development, product enhancement.

Their criteria block then splits into two columns, and the left one asks for no company at all.

Cradle's published CIP Spark criteria, showing an individual column beside a companies column The criteria section of Cradle's CIP Spark page, captured 8 August 2026.

INDIVIDUAL

  1. Minimum 2 individuals in a team (at least 1 Malaysian).
  2. Minimum 1 individual residing in Malaysia (Malaysian / Non-Malaysian).

COMPANIES: LLP, ENTERPRISE & SDN BHD

  1. For < 51% Malaysian owned, majority employees must be Malaysian. 2. < 5 years of incorporation. 3. Accumulated revenue < RM3 million. 4. Have IP rights. 5. No other companies hold 25% or more. 6. No paid-up capital requirement.

So the company route is wider than people assume: LLP, Enterprise and Sdn Bhd all qualify, provided the entity is under five years old, revenue sits below RM3 million, and you own the IP or hold an exclusive licence.

The part sole proprietors miss is the stage rule. Spark takes applications from ideation, prototype development and product enhancement. Asked whether you need traction before applying, Cradle answers not necessarily: it depends on your stage of product development. A working prototype or MVP is expected by the end of the funding, not before it starts.

What CIP Sprint asks for that CIP Spark does not

Sprint's criteria page has one column, not two. It is headed COMPANIES, and line one is Sdn Bhd.

Cradle's published CIP Sprint criteria, a single companies column beginning with Sdn Bhd The criteria section of Cradle's CIP Sprint page, captured 8 August 2026. No individual column exists.

COMPANIES

  1. Sdn Bhd.
  2. Minimum 2 Directors: at least 1 individual must be Malaysian, at least 1 individual residing in Malaysia.
  3. For < 51% Malaysian owned, majority employees must be Malaysian.
  4. < 7 years of incorporation.
  5. Accumulated revenue < RM5 million.
  6. Have IP rights.
  7. No other companies hold 25% or more.
  8. Paid-up capital of at least RM10,000.

There is no individual route, so a sole proprietor has nothing to apply with. Ask Cradle whether you need traction first and the answer is yes.

Put that list next to Spark's and the incorporation question finally has a price on it. What a Sdn Bhd buys you is access to the RM450,000 gap between the two ceilings.

Cradle grant Malaysia: what neither page tells you

Which Cradle grant you can apply for today, sorted by your situation Find yourself in a column before reading another eligibility list.

Both grants are conditional. Recipients are subject to paying back the amount disbursed if the funding agreement is terminated, and Cradle's grants page calls Sprint conditional and convertible on top of that. Neither has the shape of a non-matching grant like MDEC's Digital Content Grant, whose Marketing and Commercialisation Grant funds up to 100% of project cost with nothing from you, but which no sole proprietor can apply for. Money also arrives by advance payment and reimbursement against milestones, not as a lump sum.

Approval takes roughly two to four months from pitching. Cradle publishes no window and no closing date for either grant, so there is no deadline to plan a runway against.

Two questions sit open. Cradle's pages do not say whether an individual approved for Spark must then incorporate to receive the funds. Nor do they say how a founder's own build time is costed, which matters when 60% must go to development and your development is you.

Our take: that second question decides whether RM150,000 is really RM150,000. If founder time cannot be claimed, the developmental 60% has to go to people you hold invoices for, and a two-person team's real ceiling sits lower. Worth an email before it is worth a pitch deck.

How to apply for a Cradle grant

Register on Cradle's Grant Management System and submit a pitch deck on their template. Verification documents are only requested once you are shortlisted, so your first submission is a deck and nothing else.

If what you are building is ordinary business software rather than a fundable innovation, Malaysia Digital status and the MDEC schemes are a better use of the afternoon.

Work out which Cradle grant you qualify for today

Do not incorporate to become eligible. Read three lines off your own SSM record first: what you are registered as, how many years ago, and your revenue to date. Those three facts, against the table above, tell you which grant you can apply for this week.

Then send Cradle one email at [email protected], or call +603 4045 8600, and ask the question their pages do not answer: if two individuals are approved for Spark, does receiving the money require a company? The answer decides whether incorporating belongs before your application or after it, and only Cradle can settle it.

Not sure whether you are building fundable innovation or a custom software build you should just pay for? WhatsApp us and describe it. You will get an honest read.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Cradle grant in Malaysia?
Cradle Fund runs two grants under the Cradle Investment Programme. CIP Spark funds development, from ideation through prototype and product enhancement, at up to RM150,000 for a maximum of 18 months. CIP Sprint funds commercialisation for a venture already in market, at up to RM600,000 for a maximum of 18 months. Both are applied for through Cradle's Grant Management System with a pitch deck on their template, and both are disbursed by advance payment and reimbursement against milestone deliverables.
Can I apply for a Cradle grant without a company?
For CIP Spark, yes. Cradle's criteria list a minimum of two individuals in a team, with at least one Malaysian and at least one person residing in Malaysia. A registered company also qualifies, and that includes an LLP, an Enterprise or a Sdn Bhd. CIP Sprint is different: its criteria are headed COMPANIES and require a Sdn Bhd, so there is no route for a sole proprietorship or an individual applicant.
Do you have to pay back a Cradle grant?
Both CIP Spark and CIP Sprint are described by Cradle as conditional grants. Recipients are subject to paying back the amount disbursed if the funding agreement is terminated, along with other terms in that agreement. Cradle's grants page describes Sprint as a conditional convertible grant. Read the funding agreement before you sign it rather than treating either ceiling as money that can never come back.
What is the difference between CIP Spark and CIP Sprint?
Stage and entity. Spark funds the build, and Cradle's FAQ says traction is not necessarily required because it depends on your stage of product development, with a working prototype or MVP expected by the end of the funding. Sprint funds commercialisation, and Cradle answers yes when asked whether traction is needed first. Spark caps company age at five years and accumulated revenue at RM3 million; Sprint caps age at seven years and revenue at RM5 million. Spark spends at least 60% on development, Sprint at least 60% on commercialisation. For both, no other company may hold 25% or more of the shares, and the applicant must own the IP or hold it under an exclusive licence.
How long does a Cradle grant application take?
Cradle estimates roughly two to four months from pitching to the approval stage for both programmes, provided documentation is complete. You apply through the Grant Management System with a pitch deck on Cradle's template, and verification documents are only requested after your application is shortlisted. Neither page publishes an application window or a closing date.
