Your AI Product Video Is Telling Shopee Buyers Not to Trust You

TL;DR

  • Malaysian buyers are not judging your AI product video on its own. They read it as evidence about the product, and a broken clip says the seller cuts corners everywhere else.
  • Shopee's AI Terms of Service say any AI content you did not make with a Shopee tool must be labelled as AI-generated, and they name listings directly. This is not a Shopee Video rule.
  • What is written only for Shopee Video is the punishment: penalty points, deboosted videos, removal, and temporary or permanent bans from the feed. On your product page the same duty applies with no published penalty behind it, which is why it feels unpoliced without being exempt.
  • Shopee also lists poor visual or sound quality, repetitive content, and the same AI host reused across accounts as content it does not permit on the feed, labelled or not.
  • The failure is not the AI tool. It is bulk generation published with nobody watching, which is unattended publishing rather than automation.
  • Three checks, about a minute per listing: watch it once at full screen, read every word printed on the packaging, and confirm the clip shows a thing you actually ship.

A buyer stops on your listing, watches four seconds of a video where the label melts off the box and the hand holding it has six fingers, and quietly decides the product is probably rubbish too. You never see that happen. You only see the sale that did not come.

An AI product video in Malaysia is a short clip generated from your product photos by an AI tool, now common on Shopee Video and on product pages themselves. Shopee's terms say any AI content you did not make with a Shopee tool has to be labelled as AI-generated, listings included. The punishment for skipping it is written only for the video feed, which is why the product page feels unwatched. What sellers keep getting wrong is not the tool and not the label. It is that nobody opens the file between the generate button and the publish button.

An r/Bolehland thread on 5 August put it plainly, at 203 upvotes: "Not necessarily against AI usage but seriously please at least do some QA/QC". The reply underneath it, at 68 upvotes, is the one that should worry sellers: "if I'm seeing shitty ads like this, treat the product itself with skepticism". Several said Shopee is full of these now, and several reckoned the clips come from affiliate accounts rather than sellers. That does not help you. The buyer still sees your product in them.

Why an AI product video in Malaysia costs you the product, not just the click

The seller thinks they published a cheap video. The buyer thinks they learned something about the seller.

A product video is not an advertisement on a billboard. It is the last thing a buyer looks at before deciding whether you are a real business that packs an item properly and answers a message. When the clip is visibly unfinished, they have no reason to assume the packing is.

We wrote earlier about how Malaysians grade an AI generated ad by how big the advertiser looks: a small shop gets forgiven, a national brand does not. On a marketplace that forgiveness has nowhere to land. The buyer cannot see your shop or your size. All they have is the listing.

Shopee's rules for an AI product video in Malaysia

Two documents, and sellers read the wrong one. The Shopee AI Terms of Service, last updated 10 June 2025, is the rule. Clause 3.3 covers AI content you did not make with a Shopee tool, "including but not limited to on a listing, Shopee Live or any other videos on the Shopee platform", and ends: "Any Third-Party AIGC must be labeled as AI-generated." Your product page is named in there.

The Seller Education Hub article is the how-to, and it is written for Shopee Video. That is where the toggle lives and where the penalties are spelled out. Nothing in it exempts a product page. The gap is enforcement, not permission.

Shopee's published enforcement list for AI content violations Shopee Malaysia's Seller Education Hub, captured 17 August 2026.

Platform Enforcement Shopee actively monitors for AI UGC that violates its policies, including unlabeled and prohibited AI UGC. Violations may result in the following actions: Penalty points. Deboosted videos (reduced visibility). Removed videos. Temporary bans from Shopee Video. Permanent bans from Shopee Video.

⚠️ Note: All AI-generated content must be labelled. Failure to comply may result in penalty points and other enforcement actions.

One more line matters as much. Under prohibited content, Shopee asks creators to "Maintain quality standards, avoid: Poor visual or sound quality. Repetitive content. The same AI host across multiple accounts." That applies whether you labelled the video or not.

What you post on Shopee VideoWhat Shopee does
AI video, label onAllowed. Shopee commissions off, AMS commissions still eligible
AI video, no labelPenalty points, deboost, removal, temporary or permanent Shopee Video ban
AI detected by ShopeeAn auto-label may be applied, and once applied it cannot be removed
Poor quality, repetitive, or a reused AI hostProhibited whether labelled or not

Bulk generation with nobody watching is not automation

What turned that thread into a business story is the detail that people are passing it around as a lifehack: automate your listing content, run it in bulk, earn extra income. The generating got automated. The looking never did, because looking was never in the workflow.

We build automation for Malaysian businesses, and the ones that survive contact with real customers all share one shape: the machine does the work, one named person owns what comes out. Take that person away and you have removed the only step that catches a bad batch before your buyers do. Our AI motion ads and AI photography run the same way. The tool drafts, a human signs off.

The check before an AI listing video goes live

Three things, about a minute per listing.

  1. Watch it once, full screen, sound on, all the way through. Most of these fail inside the first four seconds, and nobody watched four seconds.
  2. Read every word printed in the frame. Packaging, labels, price stickers. Whichever generator you picked, AI video tools still garble printed text between frames, and a misspelt word on your own box reads to a buyer as a counterfeit.
  3. Ask whether the clip shows a thing you actually ship. A colour you do not stock, a size that is not in the box, a function it does not have. Shopee prohibits false product claims made with AI on its video feed, and a buyer reads one the same way wherever it appears. Our post on AI slop versus AI that sells goes deeper.

Then label it. The terms ask for it on anything AI-made that you did not build with a Shopee tool, and on Shopee Video there is a toggle for it in the post settings. Labelling switches Shopee commissions off, but a deboosted video earns you less than that.

So do not try to automate your listings. Automate the generation, then name the one person who watches the clip before it goes live, and give them sixty seconds. That is the whole difference between a seller who used AI and a seller the buyer decided not to trust.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use an AI product video on Shopee Malaysia?
Yes, with a label. Shopee's AI Terms of Service say any AI content you did not make with a Shopee tool must be labelled as AI-generated, and clause 3.3 names listings as well as Shopee Live and other videos. The Seller Education Hub explains how to do it on Shopee Video: the AI-generated toggle in the post settings. If Shopee's own systems detect AI, an auto-label may be applied, and once applied it cannot be removed.
What happens if I do not label an AI generated video on Shopee?
The labelling duty comes from the AI Terms of Service and applies across the platform, listings included. The published enforcement list is written for Shopee Video: penalty points, deboosted videos with reduced visibility, removed videos, temporary bans, and permanent bans from the feed. Detection comes from self-disclosure, automated systems, and reports from other users.
Why do buyers stop trusting the product when the video looks wrong?
Because a listing video is not an advertisement to them. It is the last thing they see before deciding whether the seller is real. A melting label or a six-fingered hand tells them nobody in the business looked at the file, and they apply the same read to the packing, the stock and the after-sales.
Does labelling my video as AI-generated cost me anything on Shopee?
Shopee's note says that for creators who label content as AI-generated, Shopee commissions are turned off, although the creator stays eligible for AMS commissions. That is a real trade-off. It is a smaller one than penalty points or a video deboosted into nothing.
Is it still worth using AI to make listing videos?
For most small sellers, yes. Nobody in the Malaysian threads is arguing against AI itself. The complaint is about output shipped with no check. Generate in bulk if you want, then put one named person in front of the publish button and give them a minute per clip.
