Malaysians Forgive Your AI Ad. They Won't Forgive a Big Brand's.

Malaysians Forgive Your AI Ad. They Won't Forgive a Big Brand's.

TL;DR

  • Malaysians are not rejecting AI ads across the board. They are grading them by how big they think the advertiser is. A small shop is forgiven. A national brand is not.
  • The tell that broke the mall ad doing the rounds on r/Bolehland was not bad AI. It was the image generator's watermark, left in the file nobody checked.
  • Three failures get an AI ad roasted, and all three are unfinished jobs: a watermark nobody removed, a default template nobody changed, and copy that could belong to any business.
  • Tourism Malaysia pulled its AI-made Citrawarna 2026 video two days after posting it. CARMA found 84.62% of the negative talk was about authenticity, not about AI.
  • Run the two-minute check before you publish: open the file at full size, cover your logo, and read the copy aloud.

One AI generated ad standing in a Malaysian shopping mall drew more attention in a day than the campaign it belonged to, and none of it was the good kind. Someone photographed it, posted it to r/Bolehland saying it was "physically and mentally repelling me from buying their products", and the thread cleared 1,400 upvotes. The image generator's watermark was still sitting on the artwork.

AI generated ads in Malaysia are not the mistake. Malaysians have not banned them, they grade them, and the grade depends on how big they think you are.

Picture a three-outlet nasi lemak shop in Kajang. The owner makes one AI poster for a Merdeka set and tapes twenty A3 copies to the shop windows. Every point below passes or fails on that poster.

Why Malaysians are angry about AI generated ads, and who they let off

The poster's own framing is the entire finding:

"if the makcik from my taman use ai to advertise their product then its kinda fine, right, because they dont have the resource to design their iklan, but a multi billion corporation?"

The top reply, at 433 upvotes: "What's mind blowing is they didn't even bother to edit the watermark away." Nobody there is against AI. The nasi lemak shop has no designer and no budget for one, so AI reads as resourceful. A company with an agency on retainer, using the same tool, reads as cheap.

The big-brand side has a public example. Tourism Malaysia posted an AI-made promo video for Citrawarna 2026 on 22 June and pulled it two days later. Media intelligence firm CARMA found 84.62% of the negative talk was about authenticity rather than AI itself, and 53.85% about local creators being left out.

Kantar's Media Reactions 2024 study found 41% of consumers are bothered by AI-generated ads, against 29% of marketers. The makers mind less than the viewers, which is how a watermark ends up printed life-size.

The two-minute check before an AI generated ad goes out

Three unfinished jobs. Run them on the nasi lemak poster before the tape comes out.

  1. Open the file at full size and check the corners. Watermarks and trial-version badges live there and vanish at thumbnail size. That is the one that made it to the mall floor.
  2. Cover your logo and look again. If the poster could belong to the shop next door, you published a template. The stock kampung house is not your shop, it is the model's average of every shop.
  3. Read the copy aloud and find the line only you could have written. "Authentic flavours, made with love" is nothing. "Sambal fried at 5am, habis by 2pm" is your shop. If nothing survives that test, nobody actually wrote the ad.

Is it OK for a small business to use AI generated ads?

What customers seeReads small, is forgivenReads big, is not forgiven
Where the ad sitsYour own shop window or feedMall floor, billboard, TV spot
How it looksHomemade, clearly one personCorporate layout, agency polish
What a watermark saysNobody had a designerNobody opened the file

Owners guess this wrong. The nasi lemak shop is forgiven while the posters stay on its own windows. The week it buys a mall panel, it gets graded like a corporation, on the same file, with the same watermark.

We should mark our own homework, because Gotchaa Lab sells AI motion ads and AI photography. None of the three failures above is the tool's fault, though that hardly clears the tool. They are jobs somebody stopped halfway. Where those threads call the output lazy, they are right, and "the technology is improving" does not answer a watermark. We argued in July that judgment is the product, not generation. The size rule is the part we missed. On what these models can render, see our ChatGPT Images 2.0 read.

Do not stop using AI. Take the promo already sitting in your drafts and run the two-minute check on it today: open it at full size, cover your logo, read the copy aloud. Nobody has to be hired for it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are AI generated ads a bad idea for a Malaysian business?
Not by themselves. Malaysian customers are grading AI ads by the size of the advertiser. A small shop with no design budget is usually forgiven. A large brand with an agency on retainer is not. The complaints that go viral are almost never about the tool. They are about an ad nobody finished checking.
Why did Malaysians get angry about that AI ad in the mall?
Because the image generator's watermark was still on the artwork when it was printed and put on the shop floor. A photo of it drew over 1,400 upvotes on r/Bolehland in July 2026. To a customer, a leftover watermark says nobody in the company opened the file at full size before spending money on the print.
How do I check an AI generated ad before I publish it?
Three things, two minutes. Open the file at full size and look for a generator watermark or badge in the corners. Cover your own logo and ask whether the ad could belong to the shop next door. Then read the copy aloud and find the one line only your business could have written. If there is no such line, rewrite it.
Which side of the size line is my business on?
Customers cannot see your revenue. They read your placement and your polish. A poster on your own shop window reads small. A printed panel in a mall, a billboard, a TV spot or a corporate-looking layout reads big, and big is not forgiven. If your marketing has started looking corporate, you are being graded as corporate.
